Art and Antique Restoration
|
Art and antique restorers are expert, highly trained specialists who deal with some of the most delicate of rare valuables, art and antiques. Restorers generally each specialize in only one, or possibly two, types of antique or art valuables. An antique restorer, for example, may specialize in restoring antique books or antique guns, whereas an art restorer might specialize in restoring oil paintings or tapestries. Some antique restorers specialize in art from particular cultures or time periods, such as ancient Chinese antiques, or art from the Victorian era, and some restorers even specialize in the restoration of historical buildings.
Each genre of antique and art has very specialized methods, equipment, and techniques, so restorers should generally have a lot of experience in the area of work they restore. If the work is not done precisely, properly, and carefully, restorers can easily diminish the value of the art and antique being restored. In the realm of art and antiques, not all damage is considered diminishing. Certain amounts of wear that have occurred naturally are often considered to add value to the piece. Sometimes, however, if an artifact carries personal sentimental value to a client, a restorer may be hired to fully repair the ailing artifact, regardless of the effect it will have on the value of the work. But this is up to the individual clients how much an antique or piece of art should be restored.
