Land Surveying
|
Land surveyors are professionals responsible for both measuring and mapping the surface of the Earth. Surveyors establish official boundaries for land, water, and airspace. They write descriptions of land for legal documents pertaining to them, such as deeds and leases, and they also define airspace for airports, and take measurements of construction and mineral sites. Land surveyors also provide data about the shape, layout, location, contour, dimensions, distances, and elevation of pieces of land or properties.
More recently, land surveyors have begun widely using global positioning satellites (GPS) to get reference points of a very high degree of precision. Using already known positions, surveyors can map out new positions based upon the already known locations and receive any data they need, both accurately and quickly. They are hired for a wide variety of corporate and government jobs, and often work as contractors along with other professionals.
