Psychiatrists are professionally trained specialists well versed in a wide variety of principles in psychology, psychiatry, sociology, and medicine, who assist individuals in working through the stresses and problems of their lives. Similar to personal counselors, psychiatrists are generally more expertly trained individuals, and are able to prescribe medicine for treating patients, depending on their needs and conditions. Often times, when conditions arise that patients aren't able to overcome on their own, such as depression, anxiety or bipolar disorder, they seek the help of psychiatrists who are able to make professional and medical diagnoses of their conditions and are able to decide whether or not prescription drugs are necessary. Psychiatrists often operate out of offices, taking on individual clients for regular appointments on a weekly, biweekly, or monthly basis. Psychiatrists also often work as full time staff in larger organizations, such as mental hospitals, asylums, and detention centers, and are responsible to make diagnoses on potentially dangerous patients, prescribing them sedatives and other drugs in order to calm their behavior.
